Alfreada Brown-Kelly: Biography
Alfreada Brown-Kelly is a professor of sociology and criminal justice and an author of poetry who lives in Hampton, VA. She teaches sociology, criminology, urban problems, social problems, juvenile delinquency, race and ethnicity and emergency preparedness and security management. Mrs. Brown-Kelly is a graduate of Nicholls State University in Thibodaux, LA and Old Dominion University in Norfolk, VA. She received her M.A. from Old Dominion University in Sociology with a concentration in Criminal Justice. She has also published two journal articles, “Examining Risk Factors for Recidivism and Disparities in Treatment among Female Probationers” and “Examining the Relationship between Children's Behavioral Outcomes and Life Events among Incarcerated Mothers” with Hampton University colleagues and undergraduate students as co-authors. Mrs. Brown-Kelly is one of the Faculty Advisors for Alpha Phi Sigma, the National Criminal Justice Honor Society, at Hampton University. Additionally Alfreada has written three poetry books (Transformation of The Mind, Body & Soul, The Skin I Am In and My Thoughts and Prayers); a woman's anthology (Why Women Weep) and Decrees and Declarations of Authenticity. Alfreada's poetry has been featured annually in Ancestral Rites, a poetry anthology published by BookClubEtc, Praise Magazine, Hampton Roads MyTime magazine (September 2010 and January 2009) and The New Journal & Guide Newspaper. Her book, Why Women Weep, was placed on the Women in Academia (WIA) June 2011 newsletter. Alfreada is currently working on research about bullying among school-age children and black sexuality. Mrs. Brown Kelly is a sexual assault responder in Hampton and Newport News, VA.
